| Seconds Of The Moment |
[May. 16th, 2008|02:21 pm] |
With all the choices a person will make in a day, those that have the most impact on a life are only realized long after the choice was made. Then there are those rare moments when the choice appears and you know right away this is a key decision. My thanks and congratulations to the California Supreme Court for making the right choice.
Opponents are already working to have a state constitutional amendment placed on the November ballot that would ban gay marriages.
That fight will drag on but for the time being, there are a number of happy couples celebrating.
And I tip my hat to the Governor for stating clearly that he "will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling." Of course, he can say that but it would be out of his hands if they do get that motion on the ballot. Maybe, just maybe, this is one of those choices that stands. |

| validation by your professional peers is good. |
[May. 16th, 2008|01:04 pm] |
hokay. last final done, and i'm free for the summer (enter pkstudios craziness...NOW!)
critique went interestingly. got some good comments on my work, some ideas for improvements, and more ideas for next fall when i have to present a 12 print portfolio.
i think the silver lining to the morning (hell, silver CLOUD) was one of the critiquers. he co-taught some of my photojournalism class last year, and just retired after shooting for the paper for something like 30 years, and is a real...straight shooter. no flowery bullshit from him; he just tells it like it is.
i didn't have much (or rather, any) photoj stuff in my portfolio this time around, so i was especially interested to see what his thoughts were on my commercial work. previously, i'd been getting a lot of "crop this in a little here, nice composition, fix this bit of color offage here..."
he flipped through my book, then went back to go over each one individually, then flipped through again. after we talked technicals, i asked if he had any other suggestions in general insofar as subjects, concepts, room for improvement, etc.
his response?
"you don't just take photographs, you paint with the light. i want to see more of that."

| The Parish Of Dunkeld |
[May. 16th, 2008|01:00 pm] |
The Parish Of Dunkeld
O, what a parish, a terrible parish, O, what a parish is that o' Dunkel', They hangit their minister, droon'd their precentor Dang doun the steeple, and fuddled the bell. The steeple was doun, but the Kirk was still staunin', They biggit a lum whaur the bell used to hang, A stellpat they gat and they brewed Hieland whisky, On Sundays they drank it, and ranted and sang. O, had you but seen how graceful it lookit To see the cramm'd pews sae socially join Macdonald the piper stuck up in the poopit He made the pipes skirl out music divine. Wi' whisky and beer, they'd curse and they'd swear They'd argy and fecht what ye daurna weel tell 'Bout Geordie and Cherlie they bothered fu' rarely Wi' whisky they're worse than the devil himsel'. When the heart-cheerin' spirit had mounted their garret To a ball on the green they a' did adjourn Maids wi' coats kilted, they steppit and liltit When tired they shook hands, and then hame did return. If the kirks a'owre Scotland held like social meetin's Nae warning' ye'd need from a far-tinklin' bell For a true love and friendship wad draw ye thegither Far better than roarin' the horrors o' hell. |

OK, kids -- I'm hittin' DC next Thursday for Goth prom, and I want to see as many of you as I can. I now a lot of you have other engagements/events going on, and I don't get into town until about 5:30 or so, and gettin' purdy and gettin' to the venue on time are going tobe too tight to catch up with people, so....
Who's up for a late night breakfast , after everything is said and done? Thoughts? Suggestions? |

On a movie sidenote, it doesn't appear that Midnight Meat Train is playing at any theatres in the region yet. This obviously sucks. :\ (Edit: Per the trailer/official website is says 5/16/08, however per imdb.com it says August.... Me = bewildered. Will have to investigate further...) |

| Stage Fright |
[May. 16th, 2008|01:05 pm] |
In the past I had horrific stage fright. Totally freezing in place, shaking, stuttering and turning, literally, blue -- stage fright. Sudden panic attacks when even the idea came into play.
Last night, however, I was asked to get up on stage at a large event @ Tattoo Rock Parlour to pick some winners and just introduce myself and what I do.
The place was packed.
It was weird to hear: "and now i'd like to welcome a very special guest Kelowna from XM Satellite Radio" and as I made my way toward the stage people began to applause and whistle and they _knew who I WAS_ from being on the radio. Fuckin' WEIRD!
I get up there talk for a few moments, just totally free flow. Reemarking on what a stellar venue we were in, doing the proper thanks and shout outs and pimping and during it a few people shouted: "I love you Kelowna!"
It was really really surreal. Oddly, my response was: "thank you". It felt right to respond.
Not at any point was I nervous or scared.
Strange how it just goes away.
Can this other fear I constantly live with do the same please? |

So I used this handy little calculator just now and it told me how much I should weigh by 40 weeks and I think I'm going to go vomit now.
Oh, dear g-d. How do women not totally lose all sense of self-esteem during pregnancy?
(Although, I've gained a couple of pounds less than I am "on track" to do at this point, so I guess I should just shut up and relax.) |

There is a definite downside to living on top of a beautiful hill. Invariably, any round-trip run will end with an uphill. Today was my longest run to date, or so said Lance Armstrong through my headphones. 5 miles in 54'45". My pace of 10'55" a mile stayed right in the same range as my shorter 5k runs, which leads me to believe that I could push myself for a longer run yet - so long as the knees/feet don't get angry at me.
And what a beautiful day for a run it was. The smell of lilacs permeated the air everywhere, and where the flowers were lacking, the scent of freshly mowed grass filled in nicely. The lake was serene and majestic, and I only got nearly killed by a motorist once!
The rest of the day will consist of cooking, improv comedy and a night out at the Inferno for 80's Revolution. |

Definitely going to hit Artomatic tonight to meet the artists. Should be rolling in around 7-ish.
If you want to join up with the group I'll inevitably be with or coordinate so we can at least wave as we pass one another, drop me a line and let me know if you'll be there.
To all the artists I know who will be on display there: I will definitely try to make it through to see all of you!
Upcoming:
Thursday, 22 May, Indiana Jones and the Kingdome of the Crystal Skull @ the Uptown. 7:30 p.m. show. That's when bunches of us are going. You should come out, too. :)
And we'll just wait to see what else happens between now and then.
(Slow day at work here... may or may not be more.) ;) |

Both flicks, plus the in-between trailers, are playing on channel 353 SCINE this afternoon, 11:50-3:10.
Yes, I bought them separately on DVD, but seeing them as a block, with the fake movie trailers, is priceless.
Yay cable TV!

Nothing makes me cry with glee more than gay weddings. I cry at normal weddings too, but show me two ladies or two dudes kissing and I'm all "awww, they overcame such obstacles!" I am prepared to see some backlash but hope the hate will be so ugly it repulses any "swing" voters.
--
Sunday afternoon after band practice I might make my way out to the beach by my house post-Bay to Breakers. Then the Dresden Dolls concert where I expect to see lots of people I know, including my mom, and my cousin and all her teenage friends. If you see me at either of those events say hi to me, I'm the one with the Unwoman tattoo. :) |

Sitting at Cool Beans working on a couple of projects before heading up North for the weekend...
Are there any "famous" haunted sites where you live?
We have a few detailed in the Wisconsin Road Guide to Haunted Locations.
I'm sure there are some other interesting stories out there.
So, what's yours? |
