Taxes! [Mar. 19th, 2008|10:26 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I sat down tonight to figure out my taxes. After spending some quality time with WI DOR publication 121, I figured out how the thing works. So I got everything in order and am mailing out my stuff today! Chide me not for being a paper-filin' troglodyte -- it's free, and everything else out there that's a "free filing" is free to file, but they charge you for the "preparation," even if you had it all worked out on your own beforehand. Boo.

Even though this took me all night, it wasn't all that onerous. I'm sure the day will come when I hate doing taxes, but for now that isn't the case.

Go go gadget taxes!

Nice! I paid the stupid turbo tax fee because I didn't want to deal with it anymore.

Same here. Mine are the devil. What percentage of the square footage of my primary residence that I occupied for how many days last year did I rent out at what percentage of the fair market value minus what depreciation aggregated over how many years?

Oh hell with that the tax code needs burning to the ground.

TurboTax was free if you only filed your federal. Wisconsin DOR has a FreeFile site, too. I didn't pay a dime to send in my taxes.

And if you file 1040EZ, which I don't. I do 1040A, since it lets me deduct for tuition/expenses.

I did 1040A, too.

Well, shit. I just went back to their site and read it more closely.

Weak! They make it seem like it's only for 1040EZ at first blush. Well. Next year I'll have to do the same thing, so maybe I'll try it that way.

I file through H&R Block and Freefile and don't make enough to have to pay. I think the max is 54k.

Meh. I found one that claimed to be "Free," but then I got halfway through and it hung. Plus, I looked further on the site, and it was like "free file costs: $19.95 for federal, $19.95 for each state."

Boo.

I mail because it costs me a stamp and I'm really not hard up for the cash so I don't mind waiting four weeks to get my checks in the mail. I don't do auto-deposit even if it takes less time. I'm old fashion like that.

Heh. I do the autodeposit, but you can't for WI which is sad. IL lets you do it!

I also don't mind waiting. The only problem is when they say there's something wrong, then you end up having to wait five weeks and try to iron crap out. That's happened to me twice, even though it totally wasn't my fault either time. The IRS even corrected their own mistake!

I got my state refund direct deposited using TaxAct.

If you use the DOR's FreeFile, it's direct deposit.

WI has issues because they scan everything in and if you don't type or have perfect writing skills it'll read something wrong and put you on hold. That happened to me last year which is why I used the fill-in form this year. Although I thought you could write your account number on the form for direct but maybe I was mistaken.
Tele-file is way quicker... check received via mail six days after filing.

Bonus to the State for not taxing our Federal rebate checks though. :)

Yeah, people who pay for taxes are suckers.

Especially you.

Because you are a sucker.

i used turbo tax...

i didmy business / personal taxes myself and after 5 seperate forms, I had a return of like 450... then I did them in turbotax, and they put together a return of like 1400.... so I paid the fee. The tax code is the single most bastardish thing ever.
